Integrating Your Swimming Pool for Your Home and Needs

Thursday, February 10th, 2011

In the backyard swimming pool’s previous hundred or so year history, the shape and style of a swimming pool was relegated to a fairly narrow list of options.  The pools were built in a variety of generic styles, from the kidney shaped to the normal “l” shape to the square shape, most of them with normal white plaster finishes encased by normal looking tile underneath normal looking coping surrounded by a normal deck.  But this is the case no longer.

Today’s swimming pools can sometimes achieve a certain level of architectural art, invoking the ancient motifs of elegance and luxury present in the bath houses of ancient Greece and Rome, or the shaded lagoon look of a Saharan oasis, or anywhere and everywhere in between.  When considering this endless spectrum of creative possibilities for swimming pool design shape, there are several major ideas or areas of concentration to think about.  When speaking visually, you should first take a good look at any existing structures that will surround the finished pool, including not only your house but any outdoor kitchens or living areas.  Water’s natural ability to attract the eye and concentrate attention of a central focal point should be used carefully, so as not to draw attention to any negative aspects or disadvantages present in a swimming pool design landscaping Dallas or custom pool built in the climate of the surrounding areas.   The view from the backyard must be considered as well.  For instance, if a pool is to be built on a lot placed on a hill or high ground, overlooking a large body of water, consider implementing a vanishing edge waterfall into the design.  Not only does the vanishing-edge waterfall create the illusion of a seemingly endless body of water that expands onto the horizon, it serves to bring the background into the foreground by means of reflection.  This same effect has been used in reflecting pools all over the world.

Lastly, custom luxury swimming pool designs don’t have to be round or square. In many occasions people construct pools to fit personal needs such as swimming or water volleyball for fitness. Special arrangements must often be made for depth and diving in pools. Most residential pools are not deep enough to support diving more than a few feet in the air. One advantage of utilizing the expertise of a local landscape and pool designer is the water features and how water is returned from the filtration system back to the swimming pool.
