The best filtration system known today is sand. There are two characteristic that make sand the most common substance used for filtration systems. First, the water that passes through a sand filter flows from the top to the bottom.  Slots allow the sand to remain intact as the water flows through it in a lateral motion or what’s commonly known as underdrain.  The water that passes through is cleaned and flows outward.

Pool grade #20 silica sand which measures between .45 and .55 mm are the most common sand used in the above ground pool sand filter. The ideal water sand pump will clean nearly 28,000 gallons of water before the filter needs to be changed. An above ground pool sand filter has a capacity to hold up to 150 pounds of sand.

The operation of a sand filter is fairly straight forward. Plumbing is accomplished using a 360 degree valve rotation motion. There’s usually a diffuser to help even distribution continually over the sand bed. The free flowing performance is accomplished with an internal pumping mechanism. Minimal maintenance is required with well designed tanks. Most manufacturers use corrosion proof materials in the filter tank made of highly reliable thermoplastics. The under drain assembly efficiency is created using well engineered self cleaning slotted laterals for 360 degree operation to provide balanced water flow.

The tank can be easily drained without losing the most critical element in the operation which is the sand. The units are constructed for stability with corrosion free bases and measured material strength.

These are commonly found at commercial establishments such as hotels, public pools and clubs where an electric circulation maintains a specific temperature.
